What Is Biochar and How Is It Made

Biochar is biomass (wood, leaves, straw, or other biosolids) heated at high temperatures without oxygen. This process, known as pyrolysis, concentrates carbon in a form that is very resistant to biological decomposition. In 2019, Puro.earth brought the first carbon removal crediting methodology for biochar to the market. Under the Puro Standard, we issue CO₂ Removal Certificates (CORCs) to carbon removal suppliers through the Puro Registry. Climate-conscious companies can purchase CORCs to neutralize their emissions and support their sustainability claims.

The Puro.earth carbon crediting methodology for biochar was developed in 2019 and was updated in 2022 to include the latest research. Under the Puro Standard, we ensure all projects meet the highest environmental standards while guaranteeing net-negative emissions. The sequestered carbon is scientifically measured and independently verified by a reputable third party.

Impact Beyond Carbon

Beyond carbon sequestration, biochar has many environmental, social and economic benefits. When used as a soil amendment, biochar is proven to improve agricultural productivity by helping soils retain water and nutrients and restoring degraded soils. It can be used as a sorbent for wastewater to remove pollutants as well as to remediate contaminated sites. The pyrolysis process to create biochar, generates renewable energy, and furthermore, biochar provides job opportunities and an income for small farmers.
